Top 5 Tips for Applying to the SXSW Interactive Innovation Awards

The SXSW Interactive Innovation Awards is an annual competition that recognizes the most forward-looking tech developments in the connected world, launched or released in the 2017 calendar-year. The Awards showcase some of the most exciting tech projects in categories ranging from AI and digital design, to health technology and beyond. If you’re working on a cutting-edge project in one of the featured categories, read on and learn 5 pro-tips for applying.

Learn about the 13 award categories and 6 special honors that will be recognized at the 2018 Innovation Awards.

Top 5 Tips for Entry Success

Include additional resources. Links to photos, demos, social accounts, marketing material, schematics, one-sheets, case studies, etc., all build a stronger case for why your project should be selected.

Include a video. There’s no better way to convey a thorough sense of your project than through a demo or case-study video.

Always link to additional resources. Keep in mind that all additional resources like photos, videos, or pdfs, must live online and be accessed via URL link. If the additional content is password protected, don’t forget to include the username and password!

Tell us what’s different about your entry. How does it work? Why should people be excited about it? Describe the project with the following 4 grading criteria in mind: Creativity, Form, Function, and Overall Experience.

Deadlines are final. Your project doesn’t have to be fully launched as of right now. It’s okay to submit an application for a project that is in the works. Regardless of what stage of completion your project is in, you must submit your application for the Innovation Awards before the final deadline of November 10.

The Awards are open to any project, product, creative endeavor, scientific discovery, or student project that will launch or has launched between January 1 – December 31, 2017.

#TBT: 25 Years of SXSW Film – Sarah Gertrude Shapiro

To commemorate the 25th edition of the SXSW Film Festival, we continue our spotlight on the careers launched, artists discovered, powerful performances, and more from our alumni with this week’s featured artist, filmmaker, and television writer Sarah Gertrude Shapiro.

When Shapiro came to the 2013 film festival with the short, Sequin Raze she was inspired by her experiences working on the wildly popular reality television series, The Bachelor. Shapiro’s twisted and unsettling film received the SXSW Film Honorable Mention Jury Award and landed her a series on Lifetime along with Marti Noxon at the helm. UnREAL, their original and innovative drama, had it’s world premiere at the 2015 SXSW Film Festival in the Episodics section. The series delves into outrageous world of unscripted television.

We’re honored to share Shapiro’s #SXSWFilm25 journey with you.

“SXSW changed my life by…everything! It introduced me to the industry as someone to pay attention to, helped me get an agent ( I came back to LA after winning honorable mention and had meeting at every agency in town), introduced me to friends and community of filmmakers, and helped get my television show (UnREAL) green lit The wonderful jurors of the short’s program went out of their way to make me feel welcome and seen – and one of them (Jonathan Lisecki) is still a great friend.

I honestly would not be where I am without the support and community of SXSW. I will be forever and ever grateful and encourage anyone I know with a project worth seeing to submit and participate. They also have immense loyalty and premiered my TV show at SXSW. I consider SXSW family (Janet and Claudette especially ) and love their mission and dedication to filmmaking craft and storytelling over all. They are a great American institution and we are lucky they persevere and exist.”

The third season of UnREAL is slated to premiere in 2018. Stay tuned to SXSW each Thursday for more 25th anniversary stories.

Illustration & Brand Identity: Brand Refresh for Mutual Attraction

Illustration & Brand Identity: Brand Refresh for Mutual Attraction

About a week ago, we’ve featured the latest work from Radim Malinic with the branding project for Inhere. This week, he is back again but with a project in collaboration with Bristol-based Craig Minchington. It’s a refresh that involves brand identity and illustration for Mutual Attraction. A dating agency and matchmaking service that needed some love to share their expertise for everyone in the name of love. Radim and Craig both have similar skills but for this project, Radim was in charge of the creative direction & design. And Craig was behind the 3D modelling, I am digging the overall project especially where you can clearly see the style from both designers.

Collaboration work between Radim Malinic, a freelance creative director, graphic designer and speaker from London and with Craig Minchington who is also in the same field but based in Bristol, UK. They have worked together on several projects including the Harnham Salary Guide (2016) featured on ABDZ.

Mutual Attraction is a London dating agency and matchmaking service. Mutual Attraction is all about meeting people face to face, in the flesh and stepping away from the screen. Dating in the real world, with real people, looking for real love. Refreshingly simple yet effective.
