5 GorillaPod Positions You Can Try for Better Cinematography

Want to ensure you’re getting the most out of your GorillaPod? Here are some positions to bend and twist it into.

JOBY’s GorillaPods are super popular and super useful. You can wrap the arms around a pole or tree branch to shoot from a sweet POV, you can spread the arms a bit to create a tabletop tripod for stable shooting, or you can keep the arms straight (like a boring person) and use it like a big, bubbly selfie stick. Whether you’re thinking about buying one or have had yours for years, there might be some positions in which you’ve never thought to put a GorillaPod, but this video from Tausif Hussain will show you five clever setups that will not only make your rig easier to maneuver but will also help you capture more cinematic camera movements.

Here are the five different positions Hussain demonstrates in the video:

LUT Video Guide: Learn What Looks Can and Can’t Do for Your Images

LUTs aren’t magic. They only enhance the magic you’ve already created.

LUTs can be powerful tools to use when calibrating a monitor or grading your footage, but many new filmmakers aren’t quite sure what they are or what they’re limitations are. Many beginners I’ve talked to think of LUTs like they do an Instagram filter: they make a boring image awesome by giving it a vintage, vibrant, or dynamic look, but that’s not really the best or most mature way to approach applying these things to your footage.

In this video, colorist Casey Faris goes over some LUT basics, explaining what they are, how they work, and how they can be used properly to enhance your footage. Check it out below:

This Effect Is Bananas: Learn How to ‘Copy and Paste’ Any Object in Your Scene

Turn a single car into a fleet, a single soldier into an army, or a single banana into a bunch with this sweet effect.

If duplicating objects in real life were as easy as it is in post-production, we’d all have a 100 chairs like Jacqueline White. But even if centuplicating our single-seat furniture will never be achieved in our narrow human reality, it can be in our films if you know how to do a little masking and rotoscoping. In this tutorial, the team over at Film Riot walks you through the steps of “copying and pasting” an object (any object) that appears in your scene and making it look realistic, natural, and friggin’ amazing. Check it out below:

The entire process is too lengthy and intricate for me to summarize here in words, but if you take the time to set yourself up in After Effects and follow along with the tutorial, you shouldn’t have much trouble, especially if you know your way around masking and rotoscoping.

Got Noisy Audio? Here’s the Fastest and Easiest Way to Clean It Up

You recorded some audio, huh? You forgot to turn off the AC, didn’t you? Come here, buddy. Let’s clean it up.

It’s the dumbest, most aggravating mistake that I made constantly in my early days of filmmaking: forgetting to turn off fans, AC units, washing machines, and other humming, beeping, annoying electronics. It almost ruined one of my college documentaries, because, like a genius, I decided sitting next to a dishwasher mid-cycle was a good time and place to record audio, and instead of being able to hear this WWII veteran’s emotional account of being stationed near Pearl Harbor during the 1941 attack, all you can hear are friggin’ sprayers blasting dirty dishes.

There are ways to fix this, though, and many post-production apps have very powerful tools that can help you reduce the amount of noise in your audio. In this video, Logan Baker of Shutterstock shows you how to do it in Adobe Audition in just minutes. Check it out below:

The Fluid Self Photo Series by Ussi’n Yala exclusive on Adobe Stock

The Fluid Self Photo Series by Ussi’n Yala exclusive on Adobe Stock

The fine folks from Adobe Stock has shared an exclusive collection of gorgeous photos by Ussi’n Yala. He is a photographer originally from Gabon, Central Africa. What started as a simple hobby has now turned into a career. You just gotta appreciate his goal to challenge our perception of beauty and Adobe Stock is using their platform to bring more awareness and increase appreciation of African art and photography. A true stunning collection to share, check it out!

In their words

As a stock marketplace, it’s our duty and responsibility to provide the most relevant, contemporary, and high-quality images to the world’s creatives. Following British photographer Bex Day’s beautiful and authentic portrayals of the transgender community, we are proud to present Ussi’n Yala’s emotive portraits exploring gender and prejudice, exclusively for Adobe Stock.

Ussi’n’s goal is to challenge the notion of beauty and break stereotypes with his images: “I hope to free people from the injustice and social barriers we face today. I want to produce a work that will have an impact on the way society works and the way we see the world.” In October of 2016, he exhibited the photo series “Pink Albino” at the African Art Fair in Paris. The portraits were created to address and shed the prejudices held against albinos in Africa.

For his shoot on The Fluid Self, Ussi’n collaborated with two close friends, designers Clément Réthoré and Sandra Boutz. All three of them are based in France, but each faces a unique challenge of identity and acceptance due to their identity and sexuality: Ussi’n is black, Clément is gay, and Sandra is Jewish. “We each live in a constant state of discomfort in society and which is, in part, connected with who we are,” says Ussi’n, “and we wanted for this project to merge our peculiarities, while also telling the love story of two men.”

Eric Liedtke & Karlie Kloss: Create the World You Want to Live In Featured Session at SXSW 2018 [Video]

At SXSW 2018, supermodel and entrepreneur Karlie Kloss and adidas Head of Global Brands Eric Liedtke, sat down with NPR’s Guy Raz for a conversation on creating change.

Onstage, Kloss and Liedtke share their stories, their inspirations, and their visions. Although their work is seemingly worlds apart on a surface level, Kloss and Liedtke both exude a visible passion for improving the world and solving issues they care about.

Kloss didn’t enter the tech industry with the intention of creating a non-profit to address the gender disparity. She instead entered tech as the by-product of her curiosity.

“I wanted to understand what code was and all of the ways that technology was transforming the world around me.”- Kloss

While learning code she recognized the cultural issue in the tech industry and launched the nonprofit, Koding with Klossy, that empowers girls to learn to code and become leaders in tech.

Liedtke’s story is slightly different. A lifelong ocean conservancy advocate and avid water-sports fan, Liedtke used his executive position at adidas to launch a large-scale sustainability-focused campaign. He explains that as a company it is essential to ask, “what is one of the most important things we can do and make a difference in?” With Liedtke’s vision as a guide, adidas chose to address the waste and massive scale consumption of single-use plastics.

“Right now there is about 270 million tons of plastic in the oceans… a huge dump truck of single-use plastics goes into the oceans every minute.” – Liedtke

To curb the production and use of single-use plastics, adidas eliminated plastics in their retail stores, global campuses, and products – and from what Leidtke describes, that’s only the beginning.

The session ends on an optimistic note encouraging the audience to take action, pursue what they are passionate about, and create change with only one thing in mind: “Don’t let perfect get in the way of better.”

Whether you are driving change as the CMO of one of the world’s largest brands, developing a non-profit and using your platform to educate, or making more thoughtful decisions as a consumer, action of any scale is essential because the cost of inaction, as Kloss and Liedtke describe, is severe.

Why Your buyer’s Information Needs are So Critical?

When you think about how to create an effective visual storytelling strategy, it’s always critical to understand your target buyer’s information needs at each stage of the buyer’s journey.

Why?

Your buyer’s needs constantly change as she moves through the stages of your buyer’s journey.

At the top of the funnel (TOFO), the Discover stage you’re dealing with complete strangers with very narrow attention span. That’s why your buyer needs you to answer her in the shortest time and space: Why should I care?

With this in mind, based on your prior research about your buyer persona you could address basic questions addressing the core problem your product or service helps solve as an initial hook.

Once your stranger becomes a visitor and decides to check out your Website for more information, this is where you want to unpack their information needs into WHAT and HOW.

At the Consider stage, you provide information that helps your buyer deepen their understanding of a given hot topic, and opportunities to try your product/services.

At the mid-funnel (MOFO), the Purchase stage your buyer is now getting ready to close the deal she just needs you to give her more proof points, like success stories and the basic terms – to seal the deal.

Naturally, the sales cycle length depends on your audience type and price point, but the more expensive your product/service is, the more proof information your buyer would need and the longer time it would take.

Congratulations! Your buyer decided to purchase your product/service. As a new Customer, her information needs at the Adopt stage are automatically transformed into wanting to protect her investment and maximize her value.

Therefore, you need to lay out a series of core questions your new customer most likely would ask about and create a corresponding onboarding program to make them feel special and catered to.

At the bottom of the funnel (BOFO), the Advocate stage you want to create a special program for your most happy customers and turn them into advocates, so they can help spread the word on your behalf by boasting their experience working with your product/service.

Here your buyer’s information needs are all about looking for good opportunities to brag or show off their great success using your product/service.

So as you can see as your buyer moves along the stages of the buyer’s journey her information needs change and as a result, the stories and tactics will have to match each stage, the buyer persona and the platform culture you plan to engage them on.

Mapping out your buyer’s information needs is an essential factor in ensuring your buyer constantly receives relevant information to help her enjoy the overall interaction with your company – to improve her life.
