Mass Transit Railway (MTR) in Hong Kong

Have you ever noticed that Hong Kong is a fast-paced city where people are constantly on the go and life can get a bit hectic? The most important public transport to Hong Kongers must be MTR which is a railway system (mostly underground) in Hong Kong. It has a complicated railway network which is connected everywhere. We rely on it for going to school or work on time. Our daily life would be definitely messed up if the train service is a delay.

MTR is fast and convenient. But the rising MTR fee has always been the issue of complaint for a long time. And it never gets any better. According to an article in The Telegraph on JUN 2016, Hong Kong is now the most expensive place for foreign workers to live. And I think the transportation fee is one of the factors for this “achievement”.

  1. I did not know that Hong Kong was so expensive to live in. This reminds me of our nation’s capitol in Washington D.C. In that city there is a subway system called “The Metro” which takes you all around the neat historical museums and other points of interest. By the appearance of this photo, the Hong Kong subway looks much cleaner.

    • Yes, Zachary. Hong Kong subway (we called it MTR) is much cleaner compared with Subway in London or New York. And it is quite safe also.

It is the main transport system in HK and it is extremely crowded. In August, an average of 4.5 million passengers takes MTR each day. The population in HK is about 7 million. So you can see that during the peak period, the whole train will be full of people.

If you will come to HK, please take a ride on our MTR!

Where I live in Valdosta, Ga, a small town in southwest Georgia, there are no public railway systems and I have personally never seen a public railway system except on tv. People rely on their own forms of transportation to get to work or school on time, although we do have buses that pick up and drop off students from home to school. Sometimes our modes of transportation on not very fast or convenient, it depends on the time of day, the traffic, and the area you are in.
I also never thought of how expensive it is to live in Hong Kong, but your article really makes me want to research this aspect more.

  3. That’s cool I’ve never ridden on a train

  4. Hi, we have something similar to this. its called the metro station. People use it in big cities just like in your city. but sadly we have to pay for a pass to get on the trains.

  5. how many miles does it go

  6. We use it in “busy” cities
