CAMP Student Exhibition “Viva la Vida” (“Long Live Life”)
November 2nd – November 9th

The exhibition features a Day of the Dead Altar and art created by CAMP students David Bautista, Karla Rodriguez, Evelyn Hernandez, Emily Sanchez, Andy Gutierrez, Graciela Rodriguez Gonzalez, Veronica Baustista, Yucen Umana, Diana Reyes, and Karen Ramirez Rubio.
Dia de los Muertos is a Hispanic holiday with a rich tradition that integrates pre-Columbian and Catholic customs. It’s celebrated in Mexico and Latin America on November 1st as Dia de los Inocentes (Innocents Day) and 2nd Dia de los Muertos (All Souls Day). On these days, we honor those departed as their spirits make their journey back from the underwork to be with their living relatives each year. Dia de los Muertos is about celebration of the cycle of life and death rather than loss and sorrow.
In this exhibition, we will highlight an “Altar de Muertos”. The altar will feature a collection of handmade objects and pictures of our relatives as a way to honor them in the afterlife.
The altar will feature handmade cempasuchil (flower of the dead), papel picado (chiseled paper), alebrijes (spirit guides). It will also feature many other items related to honoring the dead and or guiding their souls back to their families.
