Relaxation

With midterms just around the corner, college students have went into an ongoing study mode. While it is important to make sure you have an understanding of your studies, do not allow the jitters of midterms to keep you from retaining a relaxed mind. Self-care is most important and relaxation allows you to work more efficiently.  Relaxation does not only mean taking naps and sleeping in. In fact, you can relax while still staying active. Anything you do for fun that helps ease your mind can count as relaxation.

Here are a few ways you can relax during midterms:

  • Yoga Yoga is a great practice to take up when feeling stressed. It helps you focus, increase the blood flow, and relaxes your body. While using most of your muscles at a time, your body can stretch and release any tension.

  • Meditation Meditation is a prime example of relaxation whilst it helps with stress, anxiety, and depression. Find a quiet/peaceful area, close your eyes, and focus on your breathing. In that moment, your body will become completely relaxed and the focus will be on healing your mind.

  • Listen to peaceful music or sounds of nature The sound of peaceful music can help slow your mind down and put it at ease. Listening to soft music with little to no loud instruments or words will create a peaceful setting for you. Nature sounds have the same effect as you listen to the raw and natural sounds of Earth.

  • Dance/Sing Dancing and singing is a great way to loosen up and unwind. This can help produce endorphins to boost your mood and release any stress. Turn on your favorite song and let it all out!

  • Spend time with friends and/or family Hanging out with family and friends is always a great way to boost your mood and take a break from studying. The feeling of company from loved ones is reassuring and allows you to feel more comfortable. They are also a listening ear just in case you are having trouble with school.
  • Go screen-free In today’s society, most students cannot eat, sleep, or breathe without their mobile device. It is the most efficient way to do their work. Take a break and go without looking at a screen for a minute. Try reading a book or going outside. Looking at an electronic screen for too long and too closely can lead to digital eye strain.

  • Get enough sleep Make sure you are getting at least 8 hours of sleep at night. Do not strain your mind, body, and eyes to stay awake for too long. Staying up all night and lacking sleep can lead to medical conditions and affect your health. Having no energy can result in lower moods and you become incapable of performing tasks.

  • Ask for help School comes with many challenges and every task will not be perfect. Accept your mistakes and learn from them. When in doubt, never second guess asking for extra help. Get a group of friends together for a study session, schedule a tutoring session online with Academic Support Center, or go to your professor’s office hours.
