Tips for Healthy Eating on Campus

Hey, Blazer Nation!

Welcome to your new Fitness and Wellness Portal! We are so excited with all the content that we are going to be bringing to you, and we are hoping to help you achieve and maintain the healthy lifestyle you aspire to achieve!

A healthy diet is one of the main keys to maintaining overall wellness. Contrary to popular opinion, eating on campus does not mean eating unhealthy! You just need to be strong and avoid all those temptations available.

A few tips for eating healthy on campus:

1. Choose grilled options over fried options.

We know… Fried chicken is hard to stay away from, especially here in South Georgia!

Get a grilled chicken sandwich at Chick-fil-A instead of the original! You also have many grilled options at palms.

2. Choose fresh fruit and vegetables as sides.

Try to avoid fries, mac and cheese, and other heavy sides and choose fresh produce instead!

Have you checked the vegan and the salad stations at palms? They have so many options for you to create a fresh salad, and different filling plant-based meals full of nutrients!

3. Drink water instead of soda.

You need to be drinking plenty of water to stay healthy, and this is more important for you since you are living in the hot and humid Valdosta! Avoid extra calories and refined sugar from sodas and get some extra hydration from drinking water with your meals. Don’t like the taste of water? Add some lemon or fruit slices to give it some flavor! Extra motivation to drink water vs soda: it is free!

4. Avoid heavy sauces and dressings.

Sauces and dressings based in dairy can be very heavy and add up in calories. Use vinaigrette instead of ranch or blue cheese dressing on your salads at Chick-Fil-A, Moe’s, Einstein’s, or Dining Halls. Try to avoid adding sour cream or “queso” to your burrito bowl at Moe’s, and get guacamole and vinaigrette instead! Same with your sandwich at Which Wich, try to avoid heavy sauces and fill it up with veggies!

5.  Snack smart

Eat a piece of fruit, a granola bar, nuts, or yogurt instead of a bag of chips, cookies or a muffin. You can find many healthy snacks at Langdale Market, Sustella Market, Starbucks, Valdosta Bread Company, Brewed Awakenings, the Bookstore and Einstein’s.
