On Monday, January 28, 2019, news sources reported a major bug in Apple’s FaceTime application that is used for video calling between iPhone, iPad, and Mac devices. The bug allows a caller to eavesdrop on conversations even if the recipient does not answer the call. In addition, if the recipient uses the volume or power button to reject the call, the front-facing camera on the Apple device will also be activated, allowing video feed.
Apple announced that they have turned off Group FaceTime capabilities and will be offering a software update to patch the bug later this week. You can check Apple’s System Status Page to stay abreast.
Valdosta State University Information Security recommends that faculty, staff, and students who use Apple devices turn off FaceTime until the bug has been fixed. Below are steps on how to disable FaceTime on your Apple device:
On iPhone or iPad
1. Open Settings
2. Scroll down to the option for FaceTime
3. Toggle the switch to the left so FaceTime is deactivated (the switch will turn from green to gray)
On Mac
1. Open the FaceTime application on your Mac (you can search for it in your Finder window, listed under Applications)
2. Click on the FaceTime menu in the top menu bar
3. Select the third option, Turn FaceTime Off
To sign out of FaceTime on Mac altogether
1. Open the FaceTime application on your Mac
2. Click on the FaceTime menu in the top menu bar
3. Select the second option for Preferences
4. Click Sign Out
